The UFC made its first big splash of 2023 with Fight Night 217: Strickland vs. Imavov, which took place at the APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event featured six preliminary card fights and five main card bouts, headlined by a light heavyweight battle between two top 15 contenders in Sean Strickland (No. 7) vs. Nassourdine Imavov (No. 12).

The Strickland/Imavov fight went the distance, with Strickland coming out on top via UD (49-46, 49-46, 48-47). The bout got off to a relatively slow start, as both fighters mostly just kept to low kicks and teeps. It wasn’t until the second and third rounds that Strickland was able to land some heavier punches and take control of the fight.
While Imavov held in there, he couldn’t do much in terms of landing clean blows on Strickland, who played great defense with clinches after taking the lead. Ultimately, it was almost a certainty that Strickland would win if it went to the cards.
