The Toronto Maple Leafs were able to score a couple last period goals to eke out a win against the San Jose Sharks, improving to 15-5-5 on the season. The win marks the end of a great month of November, where the teams only loss in regulation came at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins, back on the 11th of the month. The team’s overall record for November was 11-1-3.
The Leafs find themselves on a 5 game winning streak in which they have beaten the Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, NJ Devils and of course, the San Jose Sharks. If the team can keep this up until the end of this calendar year they should find themselves battling for the top seed in the NHL Atlantic Division.
Game Highlights
The start of the game was all Leafs, as the team came close to scoring on a number of occasions. The home fans had to wait a while however for their first taste of success, as Austen Matthews emptied one into the back of the net 4:19 into the second period. The triumph was short lived, as Matt Neito pulled one back for the Sharks, tying the game up at 1-1 later in the period.
It wasn’t until late in the 3rd period that the Leafs were able to pull away definitively, first through a goal from the duo of Alexander Kerfoot and Pierre Engvall and then an open net goal from Mitch Marner. Marner extended his points streak to franchise leading 18 games.
Who’s Next?
The Leafs will be traveling to Tampa Bay to take on the Lightning on Sunday, December 4th. The Lightning currently sit just a few points behind the Leafs in the Atlantic Division which should make this matchup highly contested. A win for the Leafs will extend their winning streak to 6 games and should provide some breathing room between the two teams.
