Toronto FC was able to secure another draw against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, off the back of some solid defensive play. It was the team’s third draw of the 2023 MLS regular season in five games, giving them an overall record of 1-3-1. TFC currently sits at 10th position in the Eastern Conference with 6 points.

This was the second game in a row that the TFC defense was able to keep their opponents out of the net, after a 2-0 win against Inter Miami last week. Unfortunately the offense was only able to get 2 shots on goal at PayPal Park, despite having a majority of the possession in the game.

Toronto started the game short-handed, as they were missing 4-5 starters to injuries and international duties. A couple Toronto FC II players such as Midfielder Alonso Coello were signed to short term contracts to make up for the losses.

Sean Johnson was once again brilliant in net, providing his second straight scoreless game. Johnson made a game saving diving stop at the end of regulation to preserve the draw and get TFC a much needed point on the road. The team will however need to get the offensive side of the ball in order if they expect to make a run for the postseason.

The first 10 minutes had some chances for both teams as Benji Kikanovic got onto the end of a Carlos Akapo cross at the back post in the 6th minute but couldn’t finish. On the TFC end, a Brandon Servania was able to produce a perfectly weight ball to Deandre Kerr but goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski stepped up in time to deny the attempt.

A big bright spot in the game for TFC was Canadian youngster Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty who got his first start of the season and looked impressive throughout the match. The right-back won his team a couple of free kicks on the San Jose side of the field and kept the pressure on the Quakes in the first half.

Who’s Next for Toronto FC

Next week will bring Charlotte FC to BMO field for a home game on Saturday night. Charlotte have opened their regular season at 1-1-3, drawing their last game and losing the two prior. TFC will be favorites going in and will be looking to secure a W to boost their position in the East standings.

Betting on TFC will be available on a number of top MLS online sportsbooks in Ontario if you’re think about placing a bet on the Reds.
