The Toronto Argonauts announced on March 9th they will be signing quarterback Cameron Dukes and Wide receiver David Ungerer III to the roster. Dukes is the second player at the quarterback position that the team has signed in the past week after the Argos picked up Bryan Scott.
Toronto is looking to fill the big shoes of McLeod Bethel Thompson after his departure from the CFL to the United States Football League. The starting quarterback position is expected to be taken by last year’s Grey Cup game hero, Chad Kelly, but both Dukes and Scott will likely have a role to play.
The 24-year old Dukes was with the Vegas Knighthawks in the Indoor Football League last year, playing eight games and throwing for over 1,100 yards and 27 touchdowns. He was also able to scramble for three TDs on the ground.
Prior to his time in the Indoor Football League, the 6’1, 205lb Dukes played four seasons at Lindsey Wilson College (2018-2021). He was ultra successful as a member of the Blue Raiders, finishing his career stint as a three-time conference All-American and three-time conference offensive player of the year.
Dukes led the Blue Raiders to an 11-0 record in 2021 and the program’s first NAIA National Championship. That season, he ended up passing for 2,555 yards, including 33 touchdowns and rushed for 10. Overall, in his time at Blue Lindsey, Dukes threw for over 10,000 yards and 114 touchdowns, shattering most records held for the QB position.
Veteran wide receiver David Ungerer III, 27, spent his last three seasons in Hamilton after being drafted by the Tiger-Cats in the second-round of the 2019 CFL Draft. While he didn’t get a whole lot of playing time, he caught a total of 33 passes for 456 yards and two touchdowns in 38 career games for Hamilton. An alum of Idaho, Ungerer III is 5’10 and weighs in at 171 pounds.
