The Ottawa Senators shutout the Blue Jackets 4-0 on Tuesday night, improving their regular season record to 18-17-3. The Sens are now placed in the 5th seed in the NHL Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, tied with the Detroit Red Wings at 39 points.

While the first period was relatively close, as both teams had several close calls on goal, the game was blown wide open in the second. Derick Brassard opened the scoring on a power play at 2:59 when he was able to deflect a long wrist shot from Jake Sanderson.

It wasn’t long after that Ottawa doubled its lead, when Claude Giroux snapped a face-off back to Tim Stutzle who sniped one past Joonas Korpisalo at 7:00. The last goal of the period came at the hands of Drake Batherson, who fired a shot off the iron and in from the left circle.

Going into the last period down 3-0, there wasn’t much hope left for the Blue Jackets and it showed. The final nail in the coffin was put in at 6:41 in the 3rd, after Austin Watson fired a shot from his own zone into the empty net of Columbus.

Ottawa had 34 shots on goal compared to the 22 by the Blue Jackets. Anton Forsberg was in his second consecutive start at goalie and notched his second career shutout.

Up Next for the Sens

The Senators are going to get some much needed rest after Tuesday night’s game, with a four day interval until they meet the Seattle Kraken on Saturday. The game will take place at the Canadian Tire Centre and should see two evenly matched teams.

The Kraken are currently jostling for position in the middle of the pack in the Pacific Division, holding a record of 19-12-4, sitting on 42 points.

Injury Report

Good news came to the Sens as defenceman Erik Brannstrom returned to the lineup after missing five games. Center Josh Norris is not expected to return any time soon and Forward Tyler Motte is still considered weeks away from getting back on the ice.
