
Toronto FC played in their last MLS preseason game on Sunday night against the LA Galaxy, falling 2-1 in regulation. Efraín Álvarez scored the first goal with a shot to the corner of the box in the 27th minute, assisted by Riqui Puig. Adama Diomande almost leveled out the score in the closing minutes of the first half but VAR ruled no goal, as the Galaxy went into halftime up 1-0.
The second half opened with a great strike from outside the box by Mark Delgado which opened up the goal difference to two. Despite a last minute goal by Ayo Akinola, the Galaxy never really looked out of control of the match, finishing with a 2-1 win.
Despite the loss, the Reds looked fairly good, managing to get 13 shots off to the Galaxy’s 8. They also led the way in corners, taking 9 compared to just the three by LA.
TFC played three games in the Coachella Valley Invitational, finishing with a draw and two losses. The 2-2 tie came against the Portland Timbers and the losses to Vancouver and LAFC 3-0 and 2-1 respectively. The Reds completed their pre-season schedule with a draw and three losses.
What’s Next for Toronto FC?
Toronto will kick off its season against rivals DC United on Saturday the 25th of February at the Audi Field in Washington. DC United was the only team that ended up below TFC in the MLS standings last year, finishing 14th in the Conference. Both teams will be looking to get off to a hot start after making a number of key changes.
Toronto have added seven new starting players in the off-season, including Goalkeeper Sean Johnson, forward Adama Diomande, veteran Matt Hedges and free agent Norwegian defender Sigurd Rosted. With a new look on the defensive side of the ball, the team will be looking to make up for the shortcomings of last season.
