
The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the New York Islanders 5-2 on Tuesday night, improving their record to 29-11-8. The Leafs continue to be 2nd seed in the NHL Atlantic Division, sitting on 66 points behind the Boston Bruins. Toronto are now 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.
The hero of the day was William Nylander, putting in a 4 point performance which consisted of 2 goals and 2 assists. John Tavares chipped in with a goal and an assist. while Calle Jarnkrok and Auston Matthews also scored for Toronto.
Ilya Samsonov, in his third consecutive start, made 31 saves and improved to 13-0-1 at home. Mitch Marner finished without a point which broke his franchise-record point streak at 20 games.
Anders Lee had both goals for the Islanders, who have been struggling as of late, losing their fifth game on the trott. Despite Ilya Sorokin stopping 33 shots, the Islanders dropped to 1-6-3 over their last 10.
The game started off even, with the Islanders coming out firing, opening up a 2-1 lead in the second period. It was then that the Leafs’ offense kicked into the next gear off the back of Nylander, scoring 4 unanswered goals.
In other news, Leafs defenceman T.J. Brodie took part in his first on-ice session with teammates after suffering a rib injury earlier in the month. Coach Keefe announced that Brodie won’t be available until at least Friday when Toronto will be hosts to the Ottawa Senators.
