The Toronto Maple Leafs came back from a 4-2 deficit this Tuesday night to edge the Florida Panthers in an overtime thriller, 5-4. The game winner came off the stick of William Nylander at 1:53 of OT, which was his second on the night. Nylander also has an assist to book a three point performance.

The Leafs improved to 27-11-7 on the NHL season and are sitting pretty in the second seed of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference with 61 points. Toronto has been fairly inconsistent over their last 10 games, going 5-4-1 with some uncharacteristic losses. The comeback win against the Panthers will come as a big relief, as the team gets set for some tough matchups in the coming weeks.

Matt Murray had a forgettable day in goal, allowing four goals on just eight shots before being replaced by Ilya Samsonov early in the second period. Samsonov was rock solid, stopping 11 shots for the rest of the game.

Mitch Marner added two assists to break Darryl Sittler’s 1977-78 franchise home points streak record at 19 games. It is now the longest streak in the league since Sidney Corsby’s streak of 19 back in 2010-11.

Auston Matthews, Dryden Hunt and Alexander Kerfoot scored for Toronto on top of the two by Nylander. Aleksander Barkov had a goal and an assist, while Carter Verhaeghe, Anton Lundell and Josh Mahura each scored on the Panthers end.

Toronto was down 4-3 early in the third when Nylander missed the net on a penalty shot. He was able to make up for it however, scoring at 5:59 after Marner’s initial shot rebounded off the goalie. Nylander then showed some individual brilliance, burying the winner in OT past Bobrovsky with some patient solo play.

Who’s Next for the Maple Leafs?

The Leafs square off against the Winnipeg Jets next on Thursday night at the Scotiabank Arena. Toronto are 16-3-4 at home of the season where they will be looking to win their sixth in their past 7. Winnipeg are currently 25-15-1, with 59 points, tied for first with the Dallas Stars for the Central Division.

The Jets have been 8-2 in their past 10 games and will likely be more than a handful for the Leafs.
