The Toronto Blue Jays have reported to have signed right-handed relief pitcher Chad Green to a 2-year deal. This will be Green’s second MLB team after playing for the New York Yankees for the past seven seasons.
The agreement is worth $8.5M and also features a unique contract structure that provides both the Jays and Green with flexibility and security. The deal has a conditional player option for the second year, that Green will have the ability to use if the Blue Jays decline a three-year club option. This would end up bringing the deal all the way through to 2026. On the other hand, if both sides decline the options, the Blue Jays have a two-year club option at a higher average annual salary.
Green underwent a Tommy John Surgery last year in May and has been out of action since then. It will now be Toronto’s top priority to get Green rehabilitated and ready to go somewhere in the middle of the 2023 season. A solid recovery timeline has yet to be set.
After bouncing around the Yankees rotation at the start of his career, Green made a name for himself as a reliever, thriving with a 3.18 ERA over the past three seasons. He also comes along with 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings. This is a key statistic for Toronto, who have been looking for more swing and miss pitchers for late in the game.
Green had a record of one win and one loss in 14 games with an ERA of 3.00 in 2022. His short season had one save, three holds, and 16 strikeouts. Green’s only win last season came up against the Detroit Tigers on April 20, with the Yanks team winning 5-3. His save was actually up against the Jays, relieving a 3-2 Yankees win over the Blue Jays in May.
There is no doubt Green adds depth for the latter innings for the Jays and will be a much needed addition to the bullpen. The condition he comes out in after his injury is the only question mark that the team faces at the moment. Will he be the pitcher he was in New York or will his pace and accuracy take a hit?
Either way, Green will have a number of talented pitchers by his side in the bullpen, including Jordan Romano, Erik Swanson, Tim Mayza, Anthony Bass, Yimi Garcia, and Drew Hutchinson.
