Alex DeBrincat scored at 1:36 in overtime to lift the Ottawa Senators over the Philadelphia Flyers at home on Thursday night. The win improved the Sens’ NHL regular season record to 37-33-5 as they look to make a run for a Wild Card playoff spot. Ottawa is currently sitting on 79 points, chasing the Islanders and Penguins for the final two places in the postseason.
The win came at a price as defenceman Travis Hamonic and forward Derick Brassard both suffered injuries in the game. Ottawa are already without defencemen Thomas Chabot and Jakob Chychrun, which could be extremely problematic on their backline as they look to make a push for the playoffs.
Tim Stutzle had a goal and an assist, while Austin Watson, Shane Pinto and Claude Giroux were also able to reach the back of the net for Ottawa. Cam Talbot had a forgettable night in net, stopping just 7-of-11 shots.
On the Flyers side of the puck, Tony DeAngelo, Cam York and Noah Cates, Owen Tippett were able to get one past Talbot and Felix Sandstrom made 41 saves.
The Senators were able to run the lead up to 4-1 before the Flyers answered with three consecutive goals to push the game into overtime. First York scored an unassisted gimme at 5:22 for his second of the season, followed by Cates who cut the deficit to one at 9:54 with a power-play goal. Tippett then leveled out the score by netting his 23rd of the season with 2:39 remaining to tie the contest.
The Senators outshot the Flyers 17-2 in the opening period and dominated puck time for the two opening frames. After giving up a three goal lead, Debrincat’s heriocs allowed Ottawa fans to let out a collective sigh of relief as the secured the much needed win.
