The Toronto Argonauts front office is staying bust this off season, making a number of moves prior in the month leading up to open free agency. The team recently extended the contract of FB/LB Brandon Calver and added a promising new wide receiver, Aaron Parker.
The 29-year old Calver played in 17 games for the Argos in 2022, which includes the Eastern Final and Grey Cup. He was able to record 6 special teams tackles but has been slowly transitioning to a more substantial role from linebacker to fullback.
Calver comes in at 6’3, 220lb and is a native of London, Ontario. He first signed with Toronto back in August of 2021 and played in six games in the 21’ season. Prior to coming to Toronto, Calver played for the Montreal Alouettes in 2018 and then split the 2019 season between the Ottawa RedBlacks and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
In total, Calver has logged 51 career games in the CFL and contributed 19 special teams tackles and one forced fumble.
Aaron Parker has been bouncing around the NFL, first signing with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He then moved to the Carolina Panthers in which he was featured in just one game in 2021. The six-foot-two, 210-pound wide receiver was later released by Carolina and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in June.
Parker had an impressive college career, playing for the University of Rhode Island between 2016-2019. He played a total of 44 games, notching 216 passes for 3,443 yards and 30 touchdowns. Parker’s senior year was his most successful, as he hauled in 81 passes for 1,224 yards and nine touchdowns. He led the CAA in receiving that season and was named First Team All-Conference.
The Argos have now re-signed four players from their 2022 CFL Grey Cup championship team; OT Isiah Cage, OT Trevon Tate, LS Maxime Latour and of course Calver.
The Argonauts now have 21 impending free agents that will be ready to hit the open market come February 14th. You can expect the team to keep a number of players from the Grey Cup winning team.
