Until August of 2021, the only type of sports betting legal in Manitoba was parlay betting. Parlay betting is handled by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, setting up authorized ‘Sports Select’ retail locations throughout the province. PRO LINE is the most common parlay sports betting game offered by Sports Select.

As mentioned above, single-game sports betting in Manitoba was legalized on August 27th, 2021. The move came through the passing of the federal Bill C-218, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, lifting the ban on sports betting. Bettors can now access legal single-game sports betting through the government-run PlayNow Sportsbook. Bets can be made online via computer or mobile but require bettors to be physically located within Manitoba.

Manitoba Sports Betting Timeline

While sports betting has been taking place in Manitoba for almost three decades, there haven’t been many developments until recently. Parlay bets were the only type of legal sports betting available in the province up until late 2021. The following timeline gives a better picture of how Manitoba sports betting has evolved over the years:

1990s – The Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) adds sports betting via Sport Select at participating WCLC outlets in Manitoba.

February 25th, 2020 – Bill C-218, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act is introduced to Manitoba. The proposed legislation attempts to legalize single-game sports betting.

April – June, 2021 – Bill C-218 passes in the House of Commons, Senate and receives Royal Assent. Single-game sports betting is legal in Manitoba and all other provinces in Canada.

August 27th, 2021 – PlayNow Sportsbook introduces single-game sports betting in Manitoba. Bettors can now place sports bets online at the PlayNow.com website.

January 11th, 2022 – Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries (MBLL) president and CEO Manny Atwal announces plans to expand the iGaming market moving forward. The province is expected to bring in top international bookmakers, cutting out the need for grey market websites.

Coming sportsbooks will likely partner with Canadian teams such as the Winnipeg Jets or Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
