Yes, it is legal to bet on sports in the province of Alberta. The Canadian government lifted its ban on single-game sports betting in August of 2021. Since then, Alberta’s gambling regulator, Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), has approved both online and retail sports betting. Online single-game bets can be made on and in-person bets at Sports Select retail locations. 

Parlay sports betting, on the other hand, has been legally available in Alberta since the early 90s. PRO-LINE, in particular, a product of the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, has been very popular in Alberta. Parlay bets offer the chance to bet on multiple events but require all or a select number of picks to win for payout.

Currently, there are no mobile apps available for sports betting in Alberta. This, however, is not due to legal restrictions. has yet to release a sports betting app, and there are no competitors in the market for now.

Sports betting in Alberta has been taking place since the early 90s via parlay bets. It wasn’t until recently that strides were made into single-game sports betting. Early 1990s – The Western Canada Lottery Corporation alongside the government of Alberta launched the Sports Select sports betting lottery. February 25th, 2020 – Bill C-218 is introduced, proposing an amendment to federal legislation, legalizing single-game sports betting in Canada.

October 1st, 2020 – Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis (AGLC) announced plans to launch, the province’s first and only regulated sports betting site.

June 2021 – Bill C-218 receives overwhelming approval from the Senate and receives royal assent from Richard Wagner, the Chief Justice of Canada.

September 1st, 2021 –  Play Alberta goes live, providing single-game betting odds for the first time ever at an online sportsbook in the province. 

November 1st, 2021 – Sports Select starts to operate with single-game betting odds, giving Albertans the chance to bet in-person at WCLC authorized retailers.

December 10th, 2021 – The AGLC starts to accept applications from operators who are interested in entering the Alberta sports betting market. Operators looking for casinos and partnerships with professional Edmonton sports teams were preferred.

Alberta Sports Betting Requirements

Bettors must be over the age of 18 and physically located within Alberta to engage in sports wagering. Wagering is currently only legal at certified retail locations and the Play Alberta Online Sportsbook. 

Before bettors can start betting at Play Alberta Sportsbook they will be required to sign up for a gaming account. Players enrolled in an AGLC Self-Exclusion Program will not be eligible to register.
